May 2020 Business Continuity Tip

Tax Season Identity Theft

The threat of identity theft increases during tax season when scammers ramp up attacks. Here are three things to remember to help protect your identity.

1. Ensure that your personal information remains private. Share less on social media. Maximize your security settings for all your accounts. Be conscious of what personal or identifying information you reveal about yourself in public or online.

2. Stay alert for phishing attacks and scare tactics. Tax collectors will not call you, email you, or text you to ask for credit card payments. Scammers wll try to pose as government entities, coworkers, and even friends and family members.

3. File your taxes early if possible. To avoid ID theft all year long, consider a credit freeze to prevent anyone from opening accounts in your name.
